On May 10, 2014, the Golden Spike National Historic Site held a reenactment of the joining of the Union Pacific Railroad with the Central Pacific Railroad at Promontory Summit, Utah. The reenactment was held on the 145th anniversary of the driving of the golden spike, and I was there to witness it. This historic event in 1869 signaled the completion of the first transcontinental railroad, joining the eastern states with the western ones in a way that forever made the United States one country. Grenville M. Dodge: Who was he?
Will Braddock, the young fictional protagonist of Eagle Talons, Book One in The Iron Horse Chronicles, seeks out historical personage Grenville M. Dodge to ask for help in pursuing his quest to determine his own destiny. In developing the backstory for Will, I placed the newly orphaned boy’s late father in an Iowa regiment that would have served under Dodge during the Civil War. Sean Corcoran, Will’s uncle and only living relative, for whom he is searching in Eagle Talons, also served under Dodge, and now works for him as a railroad surveyor. Continue reading
