I am a proud member of Anthem Authors. Along with Western Writers of America and the Society of Children’s Book Writers & Illustrators, Anthem Authors is one of the writers’ groups in which I participate regularly. Anthem Authors’ members have provided valuable critiques of my trilogy, The Iron Horse Chronicles.

The Bylaws of Anthem Authors states: “The purpose of the Club is to promote all types of the written word by sharing writing and publishing experience and information and by inspiring and gently critiquing novice to experienced writers.”
Whereas WWA and SCBWI are international organizations, Anthem Authors is a local club with membership restricted to residents of Sun City Anthem, Henderson, Nevada. Regular meetings of the club take place each Tuesday afternoon for a two-hour session. A member is permitted ten minutes to read a passage from his or her writing. Usually the member submits an electronic version of the planned reading, so it can be viewed on a screen while the author reads the passage aloud. Guest speakers are brought in on an infrequent basis, and social events add to the camaraderie of the group. Members sell their books at various “fairs” held by the SCA Association, with the biggest event occurring right before Christmas to permit residents to select gift items from a wide assortment of novels, memoirs, non-fiction books, poetry, picture books, and other media.
Twice each month, smaller critique groups of not more than a half-dozen members meet to permit more in-depth criticism. It is during these sessions that a writer can really fine tune his or her work. My friends and colleagues have helped me polish my novels to the point that two of them have been acquired by Five Star Publishing. Eagle Talons will be released October 22, 2014, and Bear Claws will appear sometime in 2015.
