Historic Steam Railroads in North America

Great Scenic Railway Journeys: Celebrating North America’s Steam Railways is an excellent video program about seventeen of North America’s historic and scenic tourist steam railroads. This past week, I enjoyed watching the show on PBS. It is the second time I have viewed it. Check your local station for broadcast times. You can also purchase the program on DVD from Amazon or Barnes & Noble. You may also be able to borrow it from your local library.

From Alaska to Arizona, New Hampshire to South Dakota, West Virginia to Canada, and beyond, you experience traveling through the beauty of the countryside, while learning about the impact steam locomotives and the railroads have had on life in North America.

I visited the museum in 2009. The museum contains one of North America’s finest railroad equipment collections. I look forward to another visit to the museum in the summer of 2014, when I will be in Sacramento attending the annual convention of Western Writers of America. If you are unable to visit the museum in person, take a tour on their website: http://www.csrmf.org/.

For a really great treat, go ride on one of the steam railroads in operation in your area.
