Will Braddock, the protagonist of Eagle Talons, The Iron Horse Chronicles—Book One, arrives in Omaha, Nebraska, on June 24, 1867. After running away from his home in Burlington, Iowa, twenty-seven days earlier, he crosses the Missouri River on the ferry from Council Bluffs, Iowa, to look for General Grenville Dodge. Will hopes the chief engineer for the Union Pacific can help him find his uncle, his only living relative, who works as a surveyor someplace out west on the first transcontinental railroad. You can read about how Will begins his quest to determine his own destiny in the three sample chapters included under the Books tab of this website.
When Will unwittingly fails to connect with General Dodge on his first day in Omaha, he trudges away from the river, through the downtown portion of the town, and up a hill into a residential section. He is hungry and thirsty. At a house located behind a white picket fence, he asks a woman hanging laundry in the yard if he can fill his canteen from her well.

The two children are standing in the dirt road that leads up the hill past white picket fences on the left of the photo.
